Garden fantasies (2)
Jun. 6th, 2023 03:02 pmThings that I would have in my imaginary garden, all of which would grow without fuss, disease or vermin:
- A camellia hedge, with both spring and autumn-flowering varieties, in different colours, but all scented.
- A naturalistic lotus pond, with koi. Preferably spring fed, I fancy having my own water-supply. A summerhouse for picnics next to it in the form of a Japanese tea pavilion, with a low hedge of tea bushes by the door, and a grove of bamboo.
- Japanese maples, jacarandas, paperbark maples, sweet chestnut, sweet cherry, walnut, hazelnut and almond trees.
- Brugmannsias in every colour, bluebells, crocuses, oriental poppies, Meconopsis, hellebores, lilacs, Chilean bellflower, evolvulus, tulips, delphiniums, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, osmanthus, jasmine and morning-glory.
- A serious herb and vegetable patch, with everything in raised beds around a central, geometric pond with blue water-lilies. It would be surrounded by espaliered or dwarf apricot, quince, peach, damson and cherry trees. Orange and lemon and citron trees. A bay tree, hopefully flourishing like the wicked. Mulberry trees, black and white. Blackberries, strawberries and raspberries. Persimmon and lychee trees.
- A verandah attached to the house for when it rains or it's too sunny, with a nice bronze hibiki for cooler weather.

- An open outdoors area for sitting in the evening, with a firepit, possibly in the shape of the Death Star.

- A solid, comfortable potting-shed, not too far from the house, with organised storage for all tools and equipment, a zinc-topped potting-bench, a deep, steel laundry sink, and a large, scented rambling rose to grow over it.
- a pink clover lawn and a wildflower lawn.
- a lot of compost heaps.
- a professional gardener to come in at least four times a week.
Edit: and Parma violets, lots of those.

Date: 2023-06-06 02:53 pm (UTC)Scented camellias are the best! I've only seen them in Japan but ohh do they perfume the air.
My chiro has a black walnut tree in his yard, over 100 years old, which he hates. When the wind blows it rains walnuts in showers.

Date: 2023-06-07 04:11 am (UTC)Death Star firepits are apparently sufficiently popular that lots of companies do them, in varyingly dangerous-to-user designs. Some are alarmingly spiky.
I think of this as Sam's garden on the Lonely Isle. Substituting the Death Star firepit for, say, a humorous dragon one.
