Is not leather. Manufacturers should just be honest and call it whatever it is, plastic, or cork, or compressed paper pulp or whatever. Or even, at a pinch, "artificial leather".

I bet some Madison Avenue jerk thought that calling it "vegan" meant that they could charge ten times what the actual material is worth.

Indeed! Not to mention Stella McCartney...

I have nothing against artificial leather per se. Good-quality artificial leather is better than poor-quality real leather, just as a nice, tough, rip-stop nylon is superior in both strength and lightness to most natural fibres. But "vegan leather" is so blatantly manipulative as to be insulting.
