I know a Japanese designer who actually buys second-hand kimono, and other items of traditional dress (second-hand is not popular with Japanese), and then remakes them into more or less Western style clothes.
I will look at that tumblr! A simple cotton yukata is more adaptable for normal use than a full-scale furisode, it's true! I've worn them for dinner parties, just as a long wrap dress. Add a tie-belt made from an obi (not a full-scale obi, those are impossible), and it looks like a nice modern adaptation (mine even came with a matching mask).
